Nearly a quarter of a million people rely each day on the I-435/I-35/K-10 interchange to move safely, efficiently and conveniently through Johnson County. The Johnson County Gateway Study, completed in May of 2011, identified problems with the current interchange and set forth recommendations for improvements needed to serve traffic safely and efficiently well into the future.

This website summarizes efforts and recommendations completed in the previous study and will be a source of information moving into the construction phases of the project. It will take many years to complete the proposed improvements and the Kansas Department of Transportation is committed to providing project updates throughout the process.

Project Updates: Construction to start on first phase of improvements
Construction will begin in late spring 2012 on the first phase of improvements by adding two auxiliary lanes to I-35 in both the northbound and southbound directions between I-435 and 119th Street. This project, known as the Gateway Yellow Project, will address the back up of traffic on the existing westbound I-435 to southbound I-35 flyover ramp and the complimentary northbound I-35 to eastbound I-435 movement. It will also address the heavy southbound and northbound I-35 traffic between 119th Street and I-435. For the most part, three lanes of traffic in each direction will be maintained on I-35 during construction. There will be a 30 day period where NB I-35 will be reduced to 2 through lanes. There will also be a 90 day period where some turn lanes on 119th Street will be closed. Construction is estimated to be complete by: November 2012.
