PROJECT OVERVIEW

Nearly a quarter of a million people rely each day on the I-435/I-35/K-10 interchanges to enable them to move safely, efficiently and conveniently through Johnson County. And millions of dollars of goods move through this network heading to the nearby stores and businesses that make Johnson County an economic powerhouse benefiting all Kansans.

Projected traffic growth, however, threatens the future ability of the interchanges to provide the kind of safe and timely travel that best serves the transportation and economic development needs of the region and the state.

That's why the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is studying what improvements will better handle future traffic demand, accommodate more public transit opportunities and support economic opportunities as they emerge.

The 35-month study will examine three major highways and how they interact within the local/regional transportation infrastructure. The study area includes: (Download a Map of the Study Area)

  • I-435 from Quivira Road to 95th Street
  • I-35 from 95th Street to 119th Street
  • K-10 from Ridgeview to I-435

The study will produce a preliminary design concept for improving the interchanges and a prioritized list of recommendations for better moving traffic safely and efficiently through the area. The ultimate design concept will include phased improvements that can be constructed as funding becomes available.

To meet local, regional and statewide needs, the study's project team will look to the public for their questions and feedback regarding the interchanges. We will reach out to interested stakeholders in many ways, including a project blog, onsite and online public meetings, online surveys, community and public official presentations, and an advisory group.
