STUDY BACKGROUND: PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
Nearly a quarter of a million people rely each day on the I-435/I-35/K-10 interchanges to move safely, efficiently and conveniently through Johnson County. Millions of dollars of goods move through the interchange heading to nearby stores and businesses that make Johnson County an economic engine for the region and the state.
The study examined the three major highways and how they interact with the local transportation system. The study area included: Download a Map of the Study Area
- I-435 from Quivira Road to 87th Street
- I-35 from 95th Street to 119th Street
- K-10 from Woodland to I-435
Review of Study Phases
Phase 1: Regional Study
The regional study reviewed and evaluated the interchange area to:
- Better understand the existing conditions and to determine areas for improvement,
- Better understand the influence of the regional and localized traffic generators throughout the area,
- Better understand future traffic levels and travel patterns, and
A traffic simulation model was developed within the immediate limits of the proposed interchange area to evaluate the ultimate design concept.
Phase 2: Ultimate Concept
The next step was to develop a preferred improvement concept for the interchange area. The concept will accommodate projected 2040 traffic levels as determined by the traffic model analysis.
Phase 3: Phasing Plan
The last component of the study involved phasing the improvements in over time by identifying and prioritizing feasible construction projects. As part of this effort, interim cost-effective projects were identified. Finally, a study report summarized the overall findings and recommendations of the study.
